I have always been fairly conscious about the food we eat and the products we use in our home. Although it’s not always easy or convenient, I try my best to buy healthy, unprocessed foods. I am a stickler for always reading the ingredient lists and if I can’t pronounce it I don’t buy it (usually…I have been known to indulge in a bag of greasy potato chips every now and again!).
And I feel the same about the products we use in our home, especially since becoming a mother. I am very conscious that many of the supplies and products we use on a daily basis – from dryer sheets to cleaning supplies – are often laden with chemicals and other unsavory ingredients.
So when I can, I always make our own all natural homemade all purpose cleaner. It is great for cleaning all of those tiny sticky fingerprints and leftover apple juice spills from every inch of our house. And I can rest assured that it is 100% safe for everyone in our household.
Natural Homemade All Purpose Cleaner {Minty Lemon}
Supplies
- 1 part vinegar (room temperature)
- 1 part water
- Lemons
- Fresh mint (you can substitute mint for rosemary, sage, lavender, or any other herb you like)
- Mint essential oil (30 drops)
- Spray bottle
Instructions
- Mix 1 part water to 1 part vinegar in a plastic or glass spray bottle.
- Gently rub the mint leaves together to release their scent.
- Add herbs and lemon slices to spray bottle.
- Add essential oil.
- Gently swirl to mix together.
- Seal spray bottle and let the mixture sit for 12 hours at room temperature to allow the herbs and lemon to infuse.
- Using a colander or sieve, strain the mixture and pour it back into the spray bottle, refrigerate for long-term use.
The vinegar works as a natural disinfectant and inhibits the growth of mold and mildew. I use this cleaner on almost every surface in our house, I especially love using it to clean our daughter’s vintage highchair, however, I’ve read it is not safe to use on marble & granite.

I grew A LOT of lemon scented mint. I thought it might be an interesting herb to cook with.
Instead, I would like to use it to make soap, cleaning solutions, and or candles.
Much of what I have found for recipes uses mint and lemons plus an essential oil.
Are the lemons an essential component of the cleaning, or are they added for aroma?
Alicia says
Hi Robin, mint would be a great addition to cleaning solutions! Lemon is used because it’s generally pretty safe for most material and it has some amazing antibacterial properties, which make it a great natural cleaning option. 🙂

Hi! Just wanna know are the essential oils a must?
Alicia says
Hi Veronica, peppermint essential oil not only smells amazing but it is also great for disinfecting. If you don’t have any on hand you certainly don’t need it to make a homemade cleaner, vinegar and lemon do a great job on their own!

So pretty, and I’m sure it smells amazing! Nice to have a fresh scent without being an overpowering artificial fragrance.
