If you caught our 2023 Projects and Plans post, you would know that our primary bedroom is one of the projects we plan to take on this year, and it’s at the top of our list. It basically involves simply redecorating the space to better fit our aesthetic and to make the design feel more intentional and well thought out.
Over the past few months, I have been thinking about the direction I want our bedroom to take and the design elements I want to include. I’ve finally determined I am set on bringing a feeling of depth to the space by incorporating warmer colours and lots of intentional layers, like textiles and art.
I am leaning into more wood tones, patterns, and earthy and organic elements. I think these are all relatively simple ways to create depth and add interest to an otherwise blank space.
Just like any room in our home, this one will be completed in stages. I am hoping to have the bulk of it finished within a few weeks, but there will be a few pieces that we won’t be incorporating for a few months. For example, the plan is for Nick to build our dresser, but I know time constraints mean this won’t happen immediately.
So here is a closer look at our primary bedroom design plan…
1. Wall Sconce – I’ve had my eye on these wall sconces for months now. I love the mix of matte black wrought iron with the woven triangular shades.
2. Nightstands – We will keep our existing nightstands, Nick built them last year (see them here) based on this sleek design.
3. Bedframe – A beautifully upholstered bedframe is a long-term plan for our bedroom, however, we will keep our existing upholstered headboard (DIY) and coordinating bed skirt for now.
4. Floral Print Shams – These beautiful rust-coloured floral print shams match our quilt and help incorporate a nice dose of colour and pattern.
5. Grain Sack Lumbar – A vintage grain sack lumbar creates visual simplicity to the busy pattern on the quilt and shams. Our favourite pillow shop has the prettiest fabrics and the quality has always been unmatched.
6. Basket – A shallow basket is a great addition to these nightstands as an easy and beautiful catch-all.
7. White Linen Duvet Cover – We bought this basic white linen duvet cover months ago as a foundation piece, and it’s been amazing. It is of great quality for the price.
8. Floral Print Quilt – Another budget-friendly piece that has more than surpassed my expectations.
9. Oversized Throw – This oversized throw is a great way to add layers to a bed and it’s within budget too.
10. Artificial Tree – The easiest way to breathe life and colour into a space is with greenery. I love the delicate look of this artificial tree. You can find the pot here.
11. Lamp – Another piece of lighting I have had my eye on for months. It’s the perfect combination of organic and vintage-inspired.
12. Vintage Print – Mixing a variety of artwork styles, like sketches, landscapes and abstracts is an easy way to add depth to a space. This sketch plays so nicely with the vintage landscape prints.
13. Abstract Painting – This beautiful piece of art is definitely a splurge, I am hoping to use my artistic skills to create my own work of art.
14. Candle Holders – Marble candle holders with tapered candles are a nice alternative to a basic candle.
15. Dresser – This dresser is a well-designed classic piece that will last a very long time. The tapered legs are my favourite part.
16. Dish – A small stoneware dish artfully placed on a nightstand is the perfect place to coral jewellery and lose items at the end of the day.
17. Wooden Knot – Another classic decor piece that feels earthy and organic.
18. Vintage Print – Prints are an affordable way to add art work to a space.
19. Vintage Print – Print on canvas and frame in a vintage frame for an authentic look.
20. Clock – While we usually rely on our cell phones, a beautiful clock on the bedside table is still a design must.
21. Throw – A throw in a classic windowpane pattern is a timeless choice and can transition from room to room.
22. Pillow – This striped pillow coordinates so well with the grain sack lumbar that will be on our bed, and the dark colours are a nice contrast to the lighter pieces I have chosen.
23. Armchair – If space allows, an affordable and fun armchair nestled into a bedroom corner is a great addition.
I am so happy with the design so far and I can’t wait to see this space come together. We’d love to hear what you think of the design plan so far!
