I embrace spring decorating just like I would any other season or holiday. I don’t make any significant changes or incorporate any specific spring-themed decor, instead, I rely on subtle updates that reflect the changing season.
These changes are often simple, inexpensive, and reflect the changes we see outdoors. It is often as easy as a new pillow in a current pattern or hue, a vase filled with seasonal foliage, or an updated piece of art for our home. Whether you’re buying a new piece, finding a thrifted treasure, or simply moving items from room to room, these simple changes will create a space that feels fresh and new (see our favourite spring decor here).
As I begin to transition our home from winter to spring, these are the five updates I always rely on.
5 Ways to Refresh Your Home for Spring
1. Foliage and Stems
There are so many ways to incorporate foliage into your home, and it’s such a simple way to embrace the spring season. I love the look of an oversized and textured vase filled with branches or stems. I chose these artificial pussy willow branches for our kitchen which are such a fun nod to the season.
If you’re like us and still buried in snow, head to your local floral shop for some beautiful spring blooms or invest in artificial ones. There are so many beautiful and realistic options to choose from now, which will last for years (these are some of my favourites).
2. Florals
Florals aren’t just for vases! Try incorporating springtime florals in textiles and art for an easy dose of cheer. Small floral prints or hand-blocked floral patterns on textiles, like pillows, bedding, and tablecloths create an elevated look all season long. This grey floral Hmong pillow is one of my favourites, and it looks amazing season after season. We also just purchased this beautiful block print floral quilt for our bed, it looks so high-end (we will be sharing our bedroom reveal very soon!).
3. Texture
Texture isn’t just for the colder months, I love incorporating different textures throughout our home to add interest and dimension to our spaces. Woven pillows, a vintage-inspired runner, or a rattan lamp are all great ways to incorporate texture.
Organic and textural items are also a great way to create a lived-in look and emphasis a relaxed atmosphere for the months ahead.
This beautiful runner adds a good dose of texture to our white kitchen, while this organic clay vase looks beautiful styled on our coffee table with artificial greenery.
4. Textiles
When it comes to textiles, I like to choose lighter materials for the spring and summer months. From a practical standpoint, it makes sense to want lighter fabrics when the temperature rises, but visually, these lighter textiles also give our spaces breathing room which is just what they need for the spring season.
I typically swap our heavier throws for ones of cotton or muslin.
5. Art
Vintage art prints (or authentic pieces) are another easy way to update areas of your home that may feel stale. I love incorporating a new piece of art that reflects the season, like a beautiful landscape or floral still-life.
If I can’t find the perfect vintage piece at our local thrift shop I rely on inexpensive prints framed in beautiful vintage frames to create the same look.
These are the changes I’ve made so far, and as the weeks move forward, I’ll continue to make subtle changes to reflect the spring season.
