Bedrooms are often overlooked when it comes to the design of our homes. Too often we spend all of our focus and resources on the main living spaces, like the kitchen and living room, leaving little thought, and budget for the rest of the house. And while we always need to take into consideration time constraints and cost, thoughtfully designed bedrooms should be a priority! After all, we spend a lot of time in our bedrooms, and creating a cozy, inviting, and beautiful space to unwind in at the end of the day plays a big part in our well-being.
Our primary bedroom had been overlooked for a long time, it felt outdated, undecorated, and a little bit bare. We’ve spent a lot of time working on our kitchen, living room, dining room, and girls’ bedrooms, but finally found the time to give our bedroom some attention.
Our design plan for the space featured wood tones, patterns, and earthy and organic elements to create an inviting and lived-in atmosphere.
We weren’t starting from scratch, we already had some really good base pieces, like an upholstered headboard, custom-built nightstands, and a basic dresser. Most of this project was simply decorating, and while we’ve had a great start on our bedroom, I am calling this phase one as I still want to layer in a lot more personality. But I am taking my time to make sure I get it just right.
I’m envisioning a dark wood bench at the end of our bed, more art, and maybe
Furniture
Bed
Eventually, we would love to add an upholstered bed to our space but for now, an upholstered headboard and a coordinating linen bed skirt do the trick. It was much less expensive and created a really streamlined and clean look.
Nightstands
Nick built these beautiful nightstands for our bedroom last year as we wanted to replace our existing nightstands with pieces that felt more modern and elevated. We chose a design that featured both practical storage and a clean linear look. The single drawer provides storage, while the open area is great for displaying books or a beautiful basket.
The natural wood finish of the nightstands is the perfect way to add warmth to our bedroom.
Dresser
The dresser is another piece we would love to update. Eventually, we will give this one a new look or Nick will build us a brand-new piece. I still love the one I included in our design plan, so maybe he will build us something similar.
In the meantime, we added new hardware to our current dresser. Hardware is such a simple and inexpensive way to elevate any piece of furniture.
Window Treatments
I didn’t change anything when it came to our window treatments. Years ago I chose these beautiful woven wood shades and they have proven to be quite timeless.
Window treatments can be an investment, and I really believe they are worth it. If you’re investing in quality window treatments, choose a material and colour that is neutral and classic. I went with a warm tone in natural grass for our woven shades and I still love them. They are a timeless option that will never go out of style.
We paired our woven wood shades with an inexpensive curtain option. The addition of curtains is a great way to soften windows and layer in another texture (and in some cases colour or pattern). These curtains are cotton, but have a really nice linen look to them. We actually have used them throughout most of our home.
You can further elevate the look of these curtains by creating a pinch pleat look with the addition of curtain hooks and rings. I share more about choosing the right window treatments for your home here.
Bedding
While updating our bedroom, we invested in new bedding. I wanted to create a neutral and relaxed look so I incorporated a white, cream, and beige colour palette and natural materials like cotton and linen.
I made our bed with a beautiful sheet set, a coverlet, and a linen duvet. I layered it with a block print quilt and coordinating shams to add a touch of colour and pattern.
To complete the look I added two 22 x 22 mud cloth pillows, with a smaller vintage grain sack lumbar layered in front.
All of these pieces were affordable but the quality of each one is amazing!
Details
Once I had all the large pieces in place, I layered in thoughtful details, like original art, an oversized lamp, wicker baskets, another beautiful custom pillow, and a few vintage finds. I still want to add a few pieces like a bench at the end of our bed and a small side table beside the chair.
It’s slowly coming together and I am looking forward to adding more personality to it as I find the perfect pieces!
